BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and School Superintendent Mary Skipper spent the day today at Franklin Park Zoo with Boston Public School students celebrating summer learning programs.

They were joined by staff members from Boston After School and Beyond, a program that works beyond the school day and school year connecting children from low-income families with experiences that help grow their educational and life opportunities.

One of the day's activities was 'Zoo School,' an interactive educational program where the kids and adults learned all about the animals they visited. "Zoo school is a great place to have fun and also learn about all the animals," said Jason, a rising fourth grader in Roxbury with a passion for reptiles. "There's a lot of different species of turtles," he said. "And there's actually a difference between a tortoise and a turtle."

Mayor Wu said there's been a big increase in Boston public school student involvement in summer learning programs. "A decade ago I'm told that in the first year, there were some 200 students... And now we are at nearly 20,000 young people getting some form of enrichment, excitement, and energy they'll carry right into the next school year."
