MATTAPAN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A suspect was arrested for allegedly shooting at Boston firefighters as they responded to a fire at a Mattapan apartment complex Saturday.

Officials said firefighters were called to a fire at 50 Fairlawn Avenue around 11:35 a.m. Minutes later, a S.W.A.T. team was called after a report of shots fired at the building.

As a standoff ensued, firefighters were able to safely evacuate the other residents from the building, said Deputy Fire Chief Michael Doherty at an afternoon press conference.

A large number of first responders congregated at the scene. The suspected shooter was eventually taken into custody, allowing crews to put out the fire, Doherty said.

According to Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox, the suspect was injured in a fall and taken to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.
