Teen Uses Dance To Fight Dementia

TOPSFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Topsfield teen is doing her part to stomp out Dementia, by creating a dance class for seniors.

High school student Maggie Chiffer spends one day a week as a dance instructor at Topsfield Town Hall. Chiffer says she it all began when she read a study showing how dance can significantly reduce someone's risk of dementia. So two years ago, she decided to create the class called "Dance out Dementia: Train Your Brain With The Beat Of Your Feet " for her Girl Scout gold medal project.

It was only supposed to last two weeks, but Chiffer decided to make it into a business. Chiffer, who has 10 years of dance experience, says she was motivated by her passion for dance and inspired by family members who have suffered from dementia.

Dorothy has been attending the classes since the very beginning. She says, "It's wonderful, it's a lot of fun. It gets us moving. It gets our brain moving. At our age it's very important to see if we can still memorize what we're doing."

WBZ NewsRadio's Carl Stevens (@carlwbz) reports.

Classes are taught every Thursday from 3:00p - 3:45p at Topsfield Town Hall.
