BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Today is National Massachusetts Day recognizing the first New England colony and the sixth state to join the union.

Massachusetts gets its name from the indigenous people who lived in this region when explorers and later the pilgrims first arrived.

Out on Boston Common today, it was not hard finding residents to talk about their home state and what they loved about Massachusetts. "This is a very happy place to be," said Eric, a Massachusetts native. "I absolutely love it here." And why is that? "For one, we are the city of champions," Eric said. "Two, this is a super walkable town."

And while many residents like Eric are quick to talk about the pride they take in their local sports teams, the Bay State offers so much more than famous athletes including poets, inventors, authors, politicians, educators, and activists. "I don't want to live anywhere else. I will live the rest of my life in Massachusetts," he said.
