WORCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Amid a recent surge in confirmed COVID-19 cases across the state, two Massachusetts leaders have tested positive for COVID-19 this week.
Mayor of Agawam Bill Sapelli tested positive for the coronavirus on Saturday. He announced his results on Tuesday, along with three other positive cases in Agawam's town hall, according to Western Mass News.
On Wednesday, Worcester City Manager Edward Augustus also tested positive for COVID-19, and 20 people who may have had contact with him are currently quarantining, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports.
Both Sapelli and Augustus are from municipalities listed as yellow on the state's color-coded COVID-19 risk map.
According to the state Department of Public Health, Worcester's positive coronavirus test rate increased this week to 3.39 percent, and Agawam's positive test rate jumped to 4.83 percent.
