CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Union Harvard student workers have voted to authorize a strike.
The student workers, of the Harvard Graduate Students Union, voted 2425 to 254 in favor of the strike, calling for “comprehensible and affordable health care, fair pay, and commonsense protections from harassment and discrimination,” the union said in a statement.
According to the union, the strike comes after the release of a study that showed Harvard’s “rates of sexual harassment and assault” have not gone down in four years.
“Harvard’s unwillingness to agree to key protections from harassment and discrimination is unconscionable, given how prevalent these problems are,” Noah Toyonaga, a Research Assistant in Physics, said. “The time is now for the Harvard administration to step up and agree to the protections that we deserve.”
The union wants to address the high cost of living for students in Cambridge and Boston, as well as health care that covers mental health and chronic illnesses.
The union has not provided a date as to when this strike would happen.
