U.S. To Close Northern Border To All "Non-Essential Traffic"

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — President Trump says the U.S. will temporarily close its northern border to all "non-essential traffic" in an effort to stem the spread of coronavirus.

The announcement comes after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau closed his nation's borders to all non-citizens on Monday, with an exemption made for U.S. citizens.

On Wednesday morning, President Trump tweeted "details to follow!"

The President's announcement comes one day after the European Union decided to close all external borders to all non-EU citizens as coronavirus cases continue to climb across the continent.

The closure of the U.S.-Canada border, which is the world's longest border between two countries, was agreed to by both countries.

According to CNN's first report of the closure, an official announcement between the two countries and details of the travel ban are expected within the next 48 hours.
