What Is The Boston Black Restaurant Challenge?

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — According to State Rep. Chynah Tyler, the Boston Black Restaurant Challenge asks people to eat at one local Black-owned restaurant per week during February, which is Black History Month.

Rep. Tyler said the Challenge was created with the Urban Affairs Group. The intention of the month-long challenge is to drive more business to local Black-owned restaurants, which have an 80 percent risk of failing in their first year, even in a non-pandemic year.

"[It's] unacceptable, particularly when our goal is to be able to create generational wealth within the Black community," Rep. Tyler said. "We want to provide pathways out of poverty for families of color."

More importantly, Rep. Tyler said, supporting Black-owned businesses means those companies are more likely to be able to hire other local Black people and make a stronger work force.

Tyler shared a long list of Black-owned restaurants in Boston for anyone who want to take part in the month-long event and help support Boston's Black communities.

The list includes Ideals Sub Shop in Roxbury, Bon Appetit in Dorchester, Food Cares Urban Market in Boston, and Pitt Shop Barbecue in Mattapan. Click here for more.
