BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Home.stead Bakery & Cafe on Dorchester Avenue has more to offer than just delicious breakfast goodies— there's recycled art lining the walls using functional items that were bound to be textile waste.
WBZ's James Rojas spoke with the artist Ayla Gavins, who said the decorative tote bags are made from recycled fabric samples with different patterns and materials to ensure no two are the same.
"Some of the stiches are diagonal or straight, some are zig zags, some are beside the pocket, some go through the pocket. I would encourage people to find new life in old things," Gavins said.

The functional art, which is for sale, came out of the necessity to reduce waste and breath vibrancy into otherwise retired objects.
"Some of the bags have one type of fabric or pattern, and some are a blend or mix, some have a pocket, some don't. It depends on what the fabric was bringing itself. I saw the beauty of these fabrics, saw the need, and put them together," Gavins said.
