Whitman's Peaceful Meadows Ice Cream To Be Sold

WHITMAN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A beloved local ice cream dairy is apparently going up for sale at the end of the summer. The auction house JJManning Auctioneers said Peaceful Meadows Ice Cream and its surrounding farmland in Whitman will be sold off at the end of August.

The ice cream shop has been a summer favorite in Whitman for decades: Peaceful Meadows has been operating for 61 years, since 1962. The auction house made clear through comments on Facebook that only the Whitman store would be sold off or closed, and the Plymouth Peaceful Meadows store would remain open.

Not much was made public as to why the owners are selling, besides the fact that they are "voluntarily selling" the property. Four parcels are up for auction, including a two-family home on the property, the ice cream shop itself and more than 50 acres of agricultural land.

Many locals were devastated by the news. The post from JJManning has garnered several hundred comments and thousands of shares.

The auction is set for August 29.
