Wrong-Way Driver Crashes Into Ambulance On Mass. Pike

NATICK, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A wrong-way driver is in critical condition after crashing into ambulance on the Mass. Pike overnight near Exit 13 in Natick.

The crash happened around 3 a.m., when Massachusetts State Police saw a person franticly driving the wrong way, weaving between lanes.

A trooper on patrol reversed their direction and followed the driver to try and signal to them to stop, but they continued driving.

According to police, other troopers were responding to a call at the Natick Service Plaza, where they then put down spike strips to stop the driver.

The driver then slammed into an ambulance after running over the spike strips.

“It was pretty dark, but I looked toward my left and I really saw a mangled car,” a witness told WBZ NewsRadio. “They were veering everybody off over there on the exit before.”

Two emergency personnel in the ambulance, a 45-year-old and 38-year-old man, were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with minor injuries. The wrong-way driver was also taken to MGH with serious injuries, and remains in critical condition.

The patient in the ambulance, a 49-year-old woman, was transported to Tufts Medical Center with minor injuries.

Mass. State Police are currently investigating the crash — and have not yet released the identity of the driver. Police expect to summons the unidentified man to face criminal charges, which will be determined after the investigation is complete.

They also reported that the suspect's vehicle had a license plate belonging to another vehicle attached to it.
